Answer Pope Francis’ Call to Prepare for the 500th Anniversary of Our Lady of Guadalupe’s Appearance
2031 marks the 500-year anniversary of Our Lady of Guadalupe’s appearance to Juan Diego on the hill at Tepeyac near what is now Mexico City. Pope Francis has called on all the Americas to prepare for this momentous anniversary. In response, Archbishop Cordileone and the Benedict XVI Institute have launched “Project Guadalupe 2031,” a three-pronged project meant to answer Pope Francis’s call to build reverence for and honor Our Lady of Guadalupe.

About the Project

The project is built around our flagship achievement, The Mass of the Americas, a new and extraordinary liturgy composed by our esteemed composer-in-residence, Frank La Rocca. Prior to the Pope’s call, the Mass itself was originally written a unity Mass to honor Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception (patroness of the United States) and Our Lady of Guadalupe (patroness of Mexico and many other Spanish-speaking countries).

A book, "The Case for Guadalupe,” with a foreword by Archbishop Cordileone explaining the theological and historical significance of Our Lady of Guadalupe's appearance, is to be published by Ignatius Press.

Archbishop Cordileone commissioned and approved a package that includes a prayer ceremony for the home enthronement of Our Lady of Guadalupe’s image, a newly commissioned painting of Our Lady of Guadalupe by San Francisco artist Bernadette Carstensen, a new Litany for Our Lady of Guadalupe and the American Saints by our poet-in-residence James Matthew Wilson (whom Dana Gioia calls “the future of Catholic letters in America”).

This newly composed litany, written by our poet-in-residence, James Matthew Wilson (whom Dana Gioia has called “the future of Catholic letters in America”) honors Our Lady of Guadalupe in a beautiful way. Approved for private use by Archbishop Salvatore J. Cordileone, it draws deeply from the miraculous events of 1531 and the Church’s longstanding history of litany prayers. Through its rhythmic invocations, the litany invites individuals and families to seek Our Lady’s protection, guidance, and maternal care, leading every heart more faithfully to her Son, Jesus Christ.
The litany is included in the Home Enthronement Kit, but you can download it as a standalone piece. -
Guadalupe: A Miracle Play is a short dramatic reading adapted from the oldest known account of Our Lady’s apparition to St. Juan Diego (from the year 1649). Designed for families or small groups, it brings the Tepeyac story to life through simple roles and dialogue. The play highlights the tender language Our Lady used and the rich symbols that spoke to both Spanish and native peoples. It offers a beautiful way to enter more deeply into the miracle of Guadalupe and the message she came to give.
